Florida Starting Medicaid Managed Care Procurement Process
State begins procurement process as Florida’s existing managed care contracts expire on December 31, 2024
November 30, 2022 – The Florida Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) released the Medicaid data book on November 22, 2022, which kicks off the Medicaid managed care procurement process. According to Florida statutes, the Medicaid data book must be released at least 90 days prior to issuing the invitation to negotiate for the statewide Medicaid managed care program.
This data book provides relevant background information that managed care plans need to run analysis and determine if they want to participate in the Medicaid managed care regions.
As Florida’s existing Medicaid managed care contracts are set to expire on December 31, 2024, AHCA needs to start the processing of soliciting new contracts. These multiyear contracts are worth tens of billions of dollars to the companies that submit winning bids to run the statewide Medicaid managed care program in Florida.
This is not the first step that Florida took to prepare for the upcoming procurement. This summer, the state issued a request for information (RFI) for those with experience in the Medicaid managed healthcare and Medicaid managed long-term care industries to provide innovative ideas and best practices to improve Medicaid for Floridians. 54 responses were received, including from insurance companies and managed care providers like Aetna, Humana Medical Plan, Inc., MCNA Insurance Company, Molina Healthcare of Florida, Simply Healthcare Plans, and Sunshine State Health Plan.
As a next step, the AHCA will host a three-hour public meeting regarding the SMMC Data book and any questions stakeholders may have on January 5, 2023, in Tallahassee, FL. The meeting agenda will be published on December 29, 2022, and can be found here.
